The Twilight Samurai or Tasogare Seibei (たそがれ清兵衛?, literally "Twilight Seibei") is a 2002 Japanese film directed by Yoji Yamada. Set in mid-19th century Japan, a few years before the Meiji Restoration, it follows the life of Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai employed as a bureaucrat. Poor, but not destitute, he still manages to lead a content and happy life with his daughters and senile mother. Through an unfortunate turn of events, the turbulent times conspire against him.

Chul Soo (Cho In Sung, A Dirty Carnival), the son of an intelligence officer, doesn't take anything seriously. He's only interested in girls and flirting and can't be bothered with schoolwork. His professor sets an ultimatum, threatening to not let him graduate unless he joins a pan-Korean historical excavation unit in Yeon-byun. On the other side of the parallel, Young Hee (Kim Sa Rang, Hot For Teacher), the smart and beautiful daughter of a North Korean diplomat, is faced with her father 's threat to marry her off. Therefore, she opts to join the excavation team as well. When Chul Soo catches sight of Young Hee, he is determined to ask for her hand immediately, but can their love cross the North-South divide?

In the beginning of the Eighteenth Century, in the transition period between the luxurious Genroku Era (1688-1703) and the simple Kyocho Era (1716-1735), the ronin - a samurai without a master - Ihei Misawa (Akira Terao) and his sweet wife Tayo Misawa (Yoshiko Miyazaki) are trapped in a very humble inn with very poor guests. The rain does not stop, and the group is unable to follow their journeys, once the water level of the river is too high to be crossed. The good and decent Ilhei goes to a dojo without the knowledge of Tayo and disputes a fight, and with the collected money, he buys food and sake for the starving costumers, making the people very happy. After the rain, in an incident with some locals, he meets the feudal landlord, Lord Nagai Izuminokami Shigeaki (Shiro Mifune), who invites him to be the chief of art of fencing of his warriors, but the envy and proud prevail and Misawa is dismissed from the aimed job. However, their conflicting families shake up their wedded bliss.

Young-su lived freely in Seoul, but when he caught liver cirrhosis his business and love affairs went down hill. There's nothing for him to rely on in Seoul anymore so he leaves the city and heads for a sanitorium in the countryside.


The sanitorium is a strange place for him to adapt to, but he later meets Eun-hee there, who is suffering from a critical lung disease but lives cheerfully without showing any of her pain. She curiously approaches Young-su while he begins to conjure up feelings for her. They fall in love with each other and begin to live togther in a small empty house. Although they're poor, they spend happy moments together.
